The school building was erected in three construction phases. The central part of the building ensemble is the former choir of the medieval Dominican monastery. The choir was completed and consecrated in 1397. After the monastery complex was partially demolished and used as a school, the sacred space was converted into an auditorium and a gymnasium from 1879, and the main school building was added to its northwest side in 1880. Wismar architect Helmuth Brunswig planned the new extension. In 1909 an additional wing was added to the south of the former choir based on a design by Paul Zeroch, The boys' bourgeois school.
