Title:
Burundi - Water Sector and Climate Resilience Building Support Programme (PASEREC)
Detail:
The Water Sector and Climate Resilience Building Support Programme in Burundi (PASEREC) aims to strengthen the resilience to the effects of climate change and improve sustainably the socio-economic living conditions of the people in the program's area. It should help: (i) developing resilient water resource mobilisation infrastructure to supply both drinking and irrigation water depending on potential water resources; (ii) building institutional, organisational and individual capacities and developing the necessary knowledge products for the sector’s smooth, integrated and inclusive development and efficient management of water resources and hydraulic (including agriculture) structures in Burundi; and (iii) building resilience to climate change and ensuring strict control of the drivers of fragility in the PIA by adopting an evidence-based approach. The PASEREC is structured to target 7 key provinces, plus the town of Gitega, and is focused on those regions most vulnerable to climate changeimpacts. The organisational structure proposed under this programme will maximise the impact and ensure a deeper and more sustainable improvement in the living conditions of the beneficiary communities. Its aim is to closely involve stakeholders and beneficiary communities in the process of defining and implementing the programme. In cooperation with Burundi’s water sector partners, PASEREC tackles the sector’s problems using a holistic approach. Such an approach requires close coordination with the different ministeries (MHEM, MINEAGRIE, Ministry of Interior, etc.). The project contributes to climate finance, with 11 million USD of the total approved amount dedicated to adaptation.
