CABO VERDE - Emergency Support to address the Flood Disasters that affected Saint Vicent, Saint Antao and Saint Nicolau Islands in Cabo Verde
Detail:
The islands of São Vicente, Santo Antão and São Nicolau in Cabo Verde were severely affected by torrential rains on 11 August 2024, which caused extensive flooding, landslides, and widespread destruction of infrastructure, homes, agricultural land, water systems and essential public services. The disaster resulted in tragic loss of life, displacement of nearly 1,500 people, major damage to schools, roads, bridges, water treatment plants, agriculture and fisheries, and significant disruption to local economic activities and livelihoods across more than 20 populated areas. In response to this emergency, and following the Government’s declaration of a state of calamity, Cabo Verde requested international support to help address the immediate humanitarian needs and restore essential services. To support the national emergency response, the African Development Bank is providing USD 700,000 in emergency grant financing through the Special Relief Fund (SRF). This grant is part of the Bank’s emergency relief policy aimed at assisting countries facing severe physical destruction, social disruption and threats to human well-being.
