Title:
Central African Republic - Pointe-Noire-Brazzaville-Bangui-Ndjamena Multimodal Transport Corridor Development Project, Phase I
Detail:
The proposed project concerns the development of the Pointe-Noire-Brazzaville-Bangui-Ndjamena multimodal transport corridor. This involves ADF financing of 207.92 million Units of Account and TAF (Pillar I) financing of 1.50 million Units of Account in the form of a grant to the Central African Republic for the implementation of the first phase. The corridor thus determined is part of the Central African Consensual Transport Master Plan (PDCT-AC), adopted under the aegis of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS). Thus structured, the project will have a combination of road and river components on the section linking Pointe-Noire to Bangui via Brazzaville and will lead to the diversification of the corridors for improving the accessibility of landlocked countries in the sub-region (CAR and Chad) and opening them up to the sea. It will enhance regional integration, particularly by fostering the implementation of the continental free trade area. The gradual approach adopted will make it possible, during Phase 1 in CAR and Congo and, through a combination of river and road infrastructure, to ensure the flow of traffic: (i) on the road portion of the corridor pending the completion of a fully asphalted link with neighbouring Congo down to the Pointe Noire Port via Brazzaville, and also (ii) on the river route linking the two countries on the Congo River and its Oubangui tributary. The total cost of Phase 1 of this project is estimated at UA 391.55 million, equivalent to XAF 308.16 billion.
