Title:
Egypt- Scatec ASA | 1.1 GW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant integrated with a 200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project
Detail:
The project involves the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of a 1 GWac solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant, a 100 MWac/200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), and an associated high-voltage substation in Nagaa Hammadi, Egypt, with an estimated cost of USD 593.6 million. The project is a key component of Egypt’s Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy 2035, which aims to transition the country’s electricity sector—currently dominated by oil and gas—towards an energy mix comprising 42% renewable sources. By combining solar PV generation with the BESS, the project will deliver clean and dispatchable energy, helping to address intermittency challenges, improve grid stability, and support frequency regulation and voltage control. Financial close is expected in early June 2025, and the project will be implemented in two phases. Phase 1, comprising 500 MWac of solar PV and a 200 MWh BESS, is expected to reach commercial operation date (COD) in March 2026 after a nine-month construction period. Phase 2, consisting of the remaining 500 MWac, is expected to reach COD in September 2026. The entire project will be completed within 15 months from financial close. It is being implemented by Scatec and, once completed, will be the first large-scale independent power producer (IPP) solar project in the country to integrate a BESS.
