Title:
Egypt - Navigation Line between Lake Victoria And Mediterranean Sea - Feasibility Study Phase 2 - Part1
Detail:
The VICMED is a Presidential Infrastructure Championing Initiative (PICI), championed by the Arab Republic of Egypt and was approve by the NEPAD Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee (HSGOC) and the AU Assembly during the AU Summit in January 2013 in Addis, Ababa, Ethiopia. The project fits within a regional programme of COMESA, and has been prioritised by the respective member countries as it is expected to contribute to the delivery of economic infrastructure necessary for achieving tangible development outcomes for the Nile River footprint countries. The project seeks to enable navigation along river Nile from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea providing riparian states access to the sea. Besides deepening regional integration, the project will provide a shorter and direct transport route between Western Europe and, Eastern and Central Africa which is relatively cheaper and environmentally friendly. The activities for which the NEPAD-IPPF assistance is requested concern part of the Feasibility Study covering Part 1 of Phase 2 which will include collection of preliminary engineering information on basin hydrology, topography, bathymetric, geological and geotechnical data; preparation of the Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment Report, financing the Project Management Unit (PMU) operations and project audit. The estimated overall duration of the Feasibility Study (Phase 2 – Part 1) is 30 months from Grant Approval. The total cost is estimated at USD2,100,000.00. From this amount, NEPAD-IPPF will provide USD2,000,000.00 (95%) and counterpart contribution of USD100,000.00 from GOE (5%) will be provided by the GOE in kind.
