Title:
Egypt - Preparation of the Technical Studies of the Water Desalination Using Renewable Energy Project
Detail:
Egypt is heavily dependent on the Nile River, which supplies much of the country, and whose waters are shared by 11 transboundary countries. The country’s water resources are thus limited when it comes to meeting the country's water needs for socioeconomicdevelopment and environmental health. Facing this problem and considering the emerging water scarcity issues derived from the effects of climate change, the national context (i.e., population increase, deterioration of water quality, etc.) and international conditions (i.e., development needs in upstream countries, international instability, economic challenges, etc.), the GOE adopted several coping measures, of those: (i) raising desalination capacity to about 8.85 million m3/day by 2050; and (ii) enhancing treated wastewater for its reuse in agriculture, energy production or others. The change solution reflected in this TA is to prepare the technical studies required to build desalination facilities to a quality that not onlyensures environmental health and protection of water resources but also uses renewable energy to protect the environment and improve livelihoods.
