Malawi – Mitigating Fragility through the Africa Disaster Risk Financing Programme in Southern Africa

The project to mitigate fragility through the Africa Disaster Risk Financing Programme (ADRiFi) is aligned to the Bank’s High 5 Priorities, especially Feed Africa and Improve the Quality of Life of Africans. It aligns with the Bank’s 10-year strategy (2024-2033) through Priority 4.3 (respond to climate change and invest in climate action) and Priority 4.4. (build resilience to shocks, conflict and fragility). The project will be financed with grant resources from three sources: a grant of UA 19.76 million (USD 26 million) from the Prevention Envelope of the Transition Support Facility (TSF), a grant of USD 8 million from the ADRiFi Multi-Donor Trust Fund (ADRiFi MDTF) and co-financing of USD 2.1 million from the beneficiary countries. The Government of Malawi will make an in-kind contribution of USD 0.6 million while the Government of Zimbabwe will make a cash contribution of USD 1.5 million (USD 0.5 million annually) towards the sovereign drought insurance premium. This project primely contributes towards climate adaptation result. As such 100% of the total approval is attributed as climate finance, out of which 100% is adaptation finance.
