Multinational - Empowerment of Women Smallholder Farmers through Digital Microinsurance

This project concerns the agricultural value chain digitization and empowerment of women smallholders through insurance and digital agronomy education. It is designed to execute human centered design research (HCD) inclusive of gender analysis with women on the use of micro insurance in agriculture and examining how it can improve women’s access to loans and farm inputs; design, develop and test relevant digital microinsurance products for women that are bundled with digital agronomy tips and implement/scale the solution reaching 180,000 female farmers. It is projected this will increase the yields on women-run farms by 20-30%. Technological enhancements will be made on improving user experience, farmer registration and onboarding and data privacy etc. It is expected that these combined works in general will reach 360,000 farmers. The expected outputs of this project are: i) Human Centered Design (HCD) feedback report on women’s insurance needs; ii) Report used to develop a digitized microinsurance product; and iii) Execution and scale.
