Namibia -Grant for the Transport Infrastructure Improvement Project - Phase II
Detail:
The Transport Infrastructure Improvement Project (TIIP) – Phase II aims to enhance the trade competitiveness of Namibia and the SADC sub-region, through improvements in the logistics value chain. This improvement in trade competitiveness and benefits therefrom to the people, is expected to contribute to the broader reduction of poverty and inequality and boost economic growth. The TIIP Phase II project scope also includes the upgrade of the railway signalling system along the Walvis Bay to Tsumeb railway, aimed at improving reliability, safety, and capacity or throughput of the railway system. The current system is based on radio communication. The proposed signalling system includes installation of an Automatic Train Control (ATC) system based on and Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technologies that will provide enhanced safety and control of train movement, allowing for higher speeds and increased capacity. The project comprises four components: (i) railway modernisation works, (ii) technical assistance services, (iii) skills development and institutional support and (iv) resettlement and compensation. This project primarily contributes to climate mitigation results. As such, 100% of the total approved amount is attributed as climate finance, of which 100% is dedicated to mitigation.
