Title:
Somalia - Kismayo-Baidoa Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Project
Detail:
The Kismayo-Baidoa Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Project is one of the priority activities resulting from the water and sanitation needs assessment conducted by the Bank in 2014. The Kismayo and Baidoa towns contribute significantly to the country’s social and economic development. Because of their concentrated populations, the two cities are favourable locations for the provision of quality health care, and water supply and sanitation services. The project, therefore, seeks to reduce economic and social exclusion of poor and vulnerable groups by improving access to safe and reliable water supply in the two towns, where around 65% of the population live below the poverty line. The Project is key to improving the quality of life for the population of Kismayo/Baidoa and its expansion will scale up the much-anticipated benefits for a wider population. Additional Financing of UA 7.5 million will mainly go towards; (i) expanding the scope of the Water and Sanitation Infrastructure component and (ii)supporting the establishment of two Water Development Agencies in Kismayo and Baidoa, respectively. The total cost including additional activities is estimated at UA 17.924 million, net of taxes and duties. The Project implementation period stands at 48 months with a completion date of 2024.
