Title:
Sudan - Port Sudan Emergency Water and Sanitation Project
Detail:
The Port Sudan Emergency Water and Sanitation Project is a restructured emergency water and sanitation operation in Sudan designed to respond to the severe water and sanitation crisis in Port Sudan caused by armed conflict, mass displacement, climate shocks, and the collapse of the Arba’at Dam in August 2024. The project restructures and consolidates three ongoing water and sanitation operations into one emergency intervention focused primarily on Port Sudan, while also including emergency water and sanitation interventions in North and South Kordofan. The project will finance climate-resilient water infrastructure development, including rehabilitation of the Arba’at wellfield, rehabilitation of transmission mains, construction of a 15,000 m³ storage reservoir at Kilo 14, installation of a new chlorination system, rehabilitation and expansion of the distribution network, construction of 50 water kiosks, and development of a 10,000 m³/day desalination plant. It also includes sanitation and hygiene interventions, institutional strengthening and capacity building, and project management. The restructured portfolio will be implemented by UNICEF Sudan as the third-party implementing agency, working closely with the Drinking Water and Sanitation Unit within the Ministry of Agriculture & Natural Resources.
