Uganda - The Strengthening of Adaptive Capacity and Resilience of Communities in Awoja Catchment of Uganda (SACRiAC)
Detail:
The Strengthening of Adaptive Capacity and Resilience of Communities in Awoja Catchment of Uganda (SACRiAC) project is designed within the context of the Government of Uganda’s National Development Plan (NDP), Uganda Climate Change Policy, and its long-term development strategy, the Vision 2040, all of which aim to promote climate change adaptation measures to mitigate negative impacts on Uganda’s economy. The ongoing AVCP-1 project activities, particularly the Achomai irrigation scheme, catchment management and livelihood activities will be directly complemented by the activities of the SACRiAC Project to ensure their sustainability. The LDCF-SACRiAC project will be implemented over four years in Bukedea, Sironko, Kapchorwa and Bulambuli districts, within the Awoja catchment, downstream of the sub-catchments of Komirya, Sironko, Simu-sisi, Muyembe and Sipi. The project consists of four components, namely: (i) Climate Resilient Infrastructure Development and Livelihoods; (ii) Institutional and Community Capacity Development; (iii) Climate Information and Early Warning Systems; and (iv) Project Management and Adaptation Learning; at a total cost of USD 9.50 million. The project will mitigate the impacts of floods and droughts on local communities as well as on socio-economic sectors, particularly the agriculture sector in the Awoja catchment. It will also improve climate monitoring and early warning systems, reduce vulnerability of people to the adverse effects of climate change and improve livelihoods, physical assets and sustainable watersheds through improved water storage and reduced land degradation by strengthening institutional capacities for effective climate change adaptation. The project primely contributes towards climate adaptation result. As such 100 % of the total approval is attributed as climate finance, out of which USD 9 milion is adaptation finance.
