Greening of Ports in India on Non-Major Ports and Fishing Harbour THE BACKGROUNDIndia has a unique maritime position. Its 7500 km longcoastline is home to nine coastal states and 1382 islands. The country has 12 major ports and 187 non-major ports, handling about1,540 million tons of cargo every year, as 95% of India-s trade by volumetransits by sea. India-s Exclusive Economic Zone of over two million squarekilometers is rich in living and non-living resources and holds significantrecoverable resources of crude oil and recoverable natural gas. The coastaleconomy also sustains over 4 million fishermen and other coastal communities.With these vast maritime interests, the Blue Economy is clearly a subset of thenational economy having a vital relationship with the nation-s economic growth.The Blue Economy is a core dimension in the Government-s “Vision of New India2030.” The sector comprises activities in fisheries, shipping, energy, mining,and manufacturing, and is estimated to be 4% of GDP. Driven by populationpressures, the exploitation of resources, and climate change, India-s coastalsystems have suffered from erosion, increasing pollution, and ecosystemdegradation. India, as a part of its commitment in COP 26 towardsClimate Action, has pledged to reduce its emission intensity per unit GDP by 45per cent by the year 2030, from 2005 levels, thereby positioning Indian portsto play a key role in contributing towards the de-carbonization efforts of thecountry. Topromote the development of green ports and shipping, India has formulatedpolicies and guidelines to promote clean energy applications with energy-savingand emission-reduction. The "Harit Sagar" or Green Port Guidelines of2023, developed by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW),provide guidance to the major ports for drawing out a comprehensive plan ofaction, covering all the components of the Port ecosystem contributing to thecarbon footprint, for achieving targeted outcomes in terms of quantifiedreduction in pollutants over defined timelines, through focused im...
