Private Schools Survey Pakistan In Pakistan, the incidence of learningpoverty stands at 78 percent, ranking it as the second highest in the region,surpassed only by Afghanistan. The country also grapples with a significantchallenge of high numbers of out-of-school children; 32 percent in 2019-20(PSLM). Notably, this percentage varies significantly at the sub-nationallevel, with some districts experiencing over 60 percent of out-of-schoolchildren. More importantly, these figures precede the impact of COVID-19 andthe devastating floods of 2022, which is believed to have exacerbated thesituation even further. To work towards improving learning povertyit is imperative to study the education landscape in Pakistan, with a focus onquality and quantity of education. Moreover, studying the overall market foreducation can help us understand the possible actions that can be taken toimprove the quality of learning in schools and address the long-term negativeconsequences of keeping children out of school. There is extensive literatureto prove the pivotal role education plays in children-s life and the impacts thatlost years of schooling can have on human capital and labor marketopportunities throughout the lifecycle. The current education landscape inPakistan consists of mainly public and private schools, with a small percentageof other privately run educational institutions, including NGO schools,madrassas, and others. In 2019-20 for instance, around 62 percent of childrenaged 5-16 years were attending public schools, 33 percent were in privateschools and the remaining 5 percent were in other categories of schools (PSLM2019-20). That said, data on schools and studentlearning outcomes is mainly only available from public schools; data on privateschools is severely lacking.
