Background The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE)has launched a project titled “Catalyzing Financing and Capacity for theBiodiversity Economy around Protected Areas” (referred to hereafter as the GEF-7Biodiversity Economy Project), which seeks to establish three BiodiversityEconomy Nodes across the country that will contribute to improved well-beingthrough inclusive, conservation-compatible rural economic development whileprotecting natural capital. The project is funded by the Global EnvironmentFacility-s seventh replenishment (GEF-7) and is implemented by the DFFE withthe South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), South AfricanNational Parks (SANParks), and iSimangaliso World Heritage as the Sub ExecutingAgencies.The World Bank-led activity “Catalyzing Biodiversity and ProtectedLands Remediation, Restoration, and Expansion around Retired Mining Sites inMpumalanga, South Africa” builds on the GEF-7 Biodiversity Economy Project andaims to expand the area of land under conservation using South Africa-sBiodiversity Stewardship Programme in Limpopo, Eastern Cape, and Kwazulu-NatalProvinces. The activity is composed of three components:· Component 1. Support the land restoration andrepurposing of retired mining sites in Mpumalanga to add biodiversity value andfacilitate the repurposing of retired mining sites, prioritizing ecosystem andbiodiversity restoration.· Component 2. Amplify lessons from SouthAfrica-s Biodiversity Stewardship Programme under the GEF-financed BiodiversityEconomy Project and support the expansion of Stewardship in Mpumalanga toexpand land under protected area status.· Component 3.
